WORKSHOP “Promoters – Developing Audiences The Hard Way”

word_RGB_logo_blueBerlin’s music scene is so vibrant because of the many independent promoters who offer their time, taste, energy and knowledge to create events. For love and, hopefully, money, these promoters champion cutting-edge local and international artists, take financial risks, collaborate with local venues, develop informed audiences and help their artists to grow professionally.

We will hear the stories of the promoters and encourage the audience to ask questions. This panel discussion will investigate topics central to how promoters operate and succeed including:

1. Venue Relationships: liaising with and securing venues and issues including noise limits, gentrification, finding the right location, maintaining these working relationships

 2. Audience Relationships: developing new audiences and maintaining your existing crowd

 3. Getting Paid: the financial models and philosophies we use to run our night and pay our artists and ourselves

4. Promotion: what kinds of publicity works for our events, how we develop promotional strategies, how technology helps or affects our work

Our panellists work at different levels from tours to house concerts, club nights to festivals:

NINA LEGNEHED, co-founder of Nordic By Nature, boutique Scandinavian music promoters

BARRY CLIFFE, founder of Cranky Booking, focused on Berlin indie folk and rock bands with occasional touring acts

original-4Promoter and musician SAMANTHA WAREING came from Melbourne to Berlin in 2009 and has instigated a band called Wasp Summer, four European tours, and Sofa Salon, a monthly Wohnzimmer concert series. She co-founded international artist collective A Headful of Bees who have released several albums and a film, created a boutique touring agency, concerts and lectures dedicated to helping independent artists take a DIT (Do-It-Together) approach to their careers.
